One of the gems I finally decided on was an Interactive Calendar Math for my Smartboard.(You can purchase this online at Lakeshore Learning for $19.99 for one download).
I was really excited about my new purchase but a little bummed when I opened it up because literally all it has on it is whats above you in the picture. I will definitely be adding more throughout the year, but I think it will be a pretty good start for the beginning of the year.
I have to admit, I do love calendar, especially when the students run it! I am excited to get back into the lower grades so I can continue it. However, I want to make sure that I hold not just my volunteers/leaders of calendars accountable for calendar but the whole class.
I went through the common core standards for 2nd grade and created this calendar map that I will be using for the first couple of weeks/months until I increase the rigor of my calendar time.
So... here it is, I will explain each item below the picture....

Here is a little explanation of what was going through my head when I made this and what Common Core standards I was correlating it with:
(Please keep in mind, this is what is going on in my head in a dream world where everything I make actually works. This work mat has not been tested.... yet! :))
Operations and Algebraic Thinking- 2.OA.2- In 2nd grade they are to mentally add or subtract numbers within 20. I am hoping by having them create daily problems in their head that add up to our daily number (day of the month... yes it's over 20... hello rigor!) they will work on this skill while also working on seeing the relationship between addition and subtraction.
Operations and Algebraic Thinking- 2.OA.3- We will be working toward this skill by as a class trying to determine if day of the month has odd or even number of members.
Operations and Algebraic Thinking- 2.OA.4- The students will draw arrays to help them visually see their addition problem written above.
Operations and Algebraic Thinking- 2.OA.1-The Smartboard program that I purchased has a word problem of the day on it. The space in the first quadrant is for student to show their word and to write the answer.
Number and Operations in Base Ten- 2.NBT.3- The students will use the number of days that we are in school to practice base ten numerals, number names, and expanded form.
Number and Operations in Base Ten- 2.NBT.4- I am planning on giving or having my leader give them two three digit numbers and they will have to decide the correct symbol.
Number and Operations in Base Ten- 2.NBT.8- I have heard through the grapevine that the students coming in struggle with 10 more 10 less during summer school, so I kept that on there while we still begin to work with 100 more 100 less.
Measurement and Data- 2. MD. 7-8- Since the Smartboard program that I purchase does not have a clock on it, I will be adding one where I will put the hands in a certain position the students will draw it on their paper and then tell me the time (to the nearest 5 minutes). On the Smartboard program I bought it has a piggy bank and it gives you a number where you have to make that using coins. I will start the year by giving them the word problem and then towards the end of the year, I will want them creating their own word problem and solving it.
At my new school you buy your own paper from the district supply store using the money that they put in your account. As much as I would LOVE to make copies of this worksheet everyday ;) it's not happening. After talking to a few teacher friends, I am thinking I will probably just put in sheet protectors. I personally am thinking not to laminate because again... this was made before I have met my students and understood where they are at with their math skills! :)
That's it for today blogging community- it's time for a little mother-daughter shopping! Stay tuned for goodies next week!
